Our very first This Is Reportage Award! Yes, it’s a big deal. These awards are only given to the very best documentary images and represent the pinnacle of moment-capturing worldwide. Also with a record number of entries in Collection Ten, only the top three-percent of submissions received an award. So huge hi-fives to all the judges Aase Pouline, Matthew Sowa, Peter van der Lingen, Prasheila Lookhar and Samo Rovan.
THIS IS REPORTAGE AWARD
This ap-peel-ing photograph was from Sarah and Chris’ Mexican-inspired wedding day. Here’s a little insight in to how this image was created.
The Scene
Firstly let’s all take another moment to appreciate that wallpaper. The colourful Harlequin design by the Irish queen of prints, Orla Kiely was a gift from retro-heaven. So instantly we were drawn to this room. Harnessing every ounce of ‘pro-ness’ we then resisted the temptation to introduce a cheeky banana and rearranging the fruit bowl. (Because that would be taking the pith!)
The Light
Whenever possible we like to use a natural light source to preserve the authenticity of a scene. So on a bright day, a large window to the left of the frame gave plenty of illumination. These photos were always intended to work best in colour using the well-lit room to highlight all those lovely patterns and symmetry.
The Moment
It was chief bridesmaids turn in the hair and makeup hot seat. This image was less about creating an emotional connection. Here the impact comes from the playful moment when all the elements align. After reading the scene and composing a flat-facing frame, it was only a short wait before everything eventually fell in to place. A genuine ‘can’t wait to see that on the big screen later’ shot.
We are super-proud of this Reportage Award and congrats to all the Collection Ten winners!
