TOP WEDDING PLANNING TIPS
Woohoo! You’re engaged! Firstly, massive congratulations! Take it all in, revel in the well wishes and smiles for the next few weeks. However, once everything has sunk in…It dawns on you that you actually have to plan a wedding. Oh no biggie.
1. Be a team
Once the news has sunk in and you’ve done lots of lovely celebrating, make time to sit down with your husband to be and talk plans. It’s easy for other people’s opinions to divide the two of you. But when you play as a team, you can stay strong and keep your perspective on what matters most.
Always discuss wedding related decisions together…We had a constant open dialogue of wedmin emails, texts and WhatsApps when we were apart at work (sorry bosses!). But the choices we made for our special day really reflected our personalities.
2. Plan, plan, plan
Get organised. As a Leo / Virgo cusp star sign, I love me a bit of organisation.
I downloaded the longest ‘wedding checklist’ I could find, pasted it into a spreadsheet and edited the parts that did and didn’t suit us. I added to it a budget tab, guest list and timeline and it was shared numerous times between myself, Gareth and my Dad. If I’d known earlier about Google Drive, it would have saved a lot of toing and froing.
It became my bible over the nine months we spent wedding planning, even making it into my Dad’s speech!
3. To DIY or not to DIY
If you have your own skills – make use of them, it will save you a fortune.
As a photographer and graphic designer, graphics and branding played a big part in our day. We designed our logo, invites, timeline, menus, signage and thank you cards etc. They were all consistent, making them instantly recognisable and they carried a personal hashtag which I loved.
However, if you don’t have any wedding related skills, don’t stress. Either forego any DIY completely or rope in your friends and family. Because there’s always someone with a useful talent or two. Any master bakers in the family?!
4. That sweet, sweet smell
Buy yourself and your hubby a new fragrance each, specifically for your wedding day.
Mine was chosen by our bridesmaid Emma. I did a sneaky trip to Jo Malone with her to see which was her favourite, and she picked English Pear and Freesia.
It’s an unseen detail which I really treasure – When you smell a new scent, your brain links it to an event, a person or a memory. So every time I smell my wedding perfume, the memories of our special day come flooding back.
5. Just the two of us
Don’t get me wrong, I love my family and friends. But the most favourite parts of our day were when it was just the two of us. Build some quality alone time into your day.
We had a forty minute car journey to the wedding breakfast, for which my brother had made us a beautiful picnic. We also had a one hour break in the afternoon, which served as great time to settle into the bridal suite, unpack our bags and have a cup of tea. It was lovely to spend some time chatting, just the two of us.
Finally, thanks for reading my wedding planning tips and hope your day is all you want it to be!
