Pop open the champers, we’ve won our second This Is Reportage Award! After another record number of entries, these awards are getting tougher to grab all the time. They represent the pinnacle in documentary wedding photography and absolutely world-class moment-capturing. Only the top four-percent of submissions received an award in collection thirteen. So huge thanks goes out to all the fab judges Albert Palmer, Pedro Alvarez, Barbara Fabbri, Ben & Kelly Koller, and Marissa Daly.
THIS IS REPORTAGE COLLECTION THIRTEEN AWARD
This photograph was from Laura and Paul’s Game of Thrones inspired wedding at Meols Hall. It was a couple of years ago now, but we have always been drawn back to this fun family moment. So here’s a little insight in to how it was created.

The Scene
We love wedding mornings at the family home, because every room is full of personality and nostalgia. Meaningful surroundings become elements that we can play with to build the intimate impact of an image. Also the central framing technique here is key to the composition. Using the doorway to frame the action in an adjoining room leads the viewer, but also adds context and depth.

The Light
The key light comes purely from the morning sun, flooding both rooms from the left of the scene. Large windows provide plenty of natural light to evenly illuminate the areas in shot. We think the clean walls and heavy contrasting frames look really cool with uncomplicated black and white tones. The absence of colour also allows our focus to remain firmly fixed on our lovely subjects.

The Moment
It was almost time for Laura’s niece to make her transformation in to Flower Girl. Clearly this little superhero can fly too. Not knowing what was going on in the next room, it was the anticipation that something fun might happen within the frame which makes this kind of shot so rewarding.
